Maternal line
The Lloyds and Davieses
Jean Brenda Lloyd’s family came from the hills and coast of Cardiganshire. Both of her parents’ families had come to London from Cardiganshire by the 1880s, and both trace back to the parish of Llanarth.
Daniel Lloyd, lead miner
Daniel Lloyd was born about 1828 near Aberystwyth. The 1861 and 1871 censuses record him as a lead miner in the Rheidol valley. His wife Anne Jenkins died in 1871 and Daniel died in 1887.
The Davies family of Llanarth
Evan Davies was born about 1807 at Troedyraur. His son Enoch Davies, born in 1834, lived his whole life in Llanarth, where he is buried. Enoch’s daughter Sarah Anne Davies was born at the Blue Bell, Llanarth, in January 1865.
John Lloyd, dairyman
Daniel’s son John Lloyd left Wales for London and married Sarah Anne Davies in 1888 at the Calvinistic Methodist chapel in Hammersmith. By 1911 he had his own dairy business in Fulham. Ten children are recorded, two of whom died as babies.
John died of influenza on 10 December 1918. A family note records that the rest of the household recovered, that Dan was away at the war, and that Arthur was home on a month’s leave and kept the dairy running.
The Lewis and Evans families
Captain David Lewis, born in Llanarth in 1833, was a master mariner. His home was Glendower, a house at Mydroilyn in Llanarth parish. He died there on 15 June 1915, aged 82, cared for in old age by his daughter Hannah Jane. The Cambrian News described him as a loyal churchman, honest and without guile. He was buried in the Independents’ burial ground. Of his two sons, John James and David Thomas, both emigrated to Toronto. John sailed from Liverpool in 1905 to join his brother, who was already in business there.
Two of his daughters, Hannah Jane and Salina, were married in a double wedding at St Paul’s, Canonbury, in April 1901. Hannah Jane’s husband, Captain Jonathan Evans, was also a master mariner. In the First World War he served as an Admiralty pilot, and in 1916–17 Hannah Jane and their daughter Bessie spent five months with him at Dover. Another daughter, Eliza Lewis, married George Evans, an Islington tailor, in 1887. Their daughter Margaret Evans was born in Wandsworth in 1888.
Enoch Gordon Lloyd, engineer
Enoch Gordon Lloyd was born in Fulham in 1890, one of John and Sarah’s sons. He became a manufacturing engineer and works director, married Margaret Evans, and by 1934 was living at Fosse Way, Ealing. So both of their daughter Jean’s parents had roots in Llanarth.
Jean Brenda Lloyd
Jean Brenda Lloyd was born in Islington in April 1925. She married Edward James Naish in Ealing in 1948 and died at Tisbury in 2010.
